Coming into the new year, my show calendar was looking a little sparse. So I figured it would be a good opportunity to try and reach out to a few orgs/publicists and see if I could capture images of some kinds of events I don’t do as much of. While looking up events, I realized hadn’t been to the Joyce Theater for a show in nearly eight years! The last one I recall attending was one I was able to photograph (so it was presumably a rehearsal). It was Complexions Contemporary Ballet‘s ballet tribute to David Bowie called ‘Stardust’. I shared the images via PopMatters but since that time, the site has been revamped and the article images are gone.
One of the first shows running at the Joyce in 2025 caught my eye as it was by an Indian Bharatanatyam-dance group that I had seen a couple of times before. The Ragamala Dance Company, featuring mother Ranee Ramaswamy and daughters Aparna and Ashwini Ramaswamy as dancers, was performing Children of Dharma. The show “explores life – forever sprouting, transforming, dissolving, and renewing – through three characters from the Hindu epic The Mahabharata“. So I reached out to the group to see if I could photograph. I didn’t hear back for a few days, and during that time the show got promoted by the NY Times, so I was afraid I would miss my chance.
Fortunately, though the run had started, after some back and forth on scheduling and my gear (I had to discreetly shoot as there was a live audience!), I was lucky enough to attend and capture the Friday evening performance. Thanks to Ashwini, Garvin, and the team at Joyce for having me out. Check out images from the performance, which mixed in projected elements, below.
