After a superb 2023, I didn’t really anticipate 2024 to be even bigger on a professional photography level (yet it still remains a side gig). I continued working with great teams at five esteemed venues and galleries: Lincoln Center, The Town Hall, Hauser & Wirth, Fotografiska and Joe’s Pub. And I captured over 215 events, by my estimate, including around 100 at Lincoln Center, about 25 for H&W and Town Hall (each) and tons more elsewhere. Sadly, Fotografiska closed their New York location but the museum is looking for a new home and will hopefully return soon.
I got to work directly with a few artists (or their teams), specifically Judy Collins, Amos Lee and Jukebox the Ghost (I made separate posts for those last two that you should check out). And I captured shows again for BrooklynVegan, PopMatters, AltPress, Bowery Presents, Shutterstock, Rolling Stone (Newport Folk specifically) and more that I tried to track on twitter.
There were a few missed opportunities, like when I mistakenly brought 24 exposure film rolls to Australia when I meant to bring 36 exposures. Or when I caught a bug one weekend which resulted in missing out on some large acts at a festival or two. Or that I didn’t get to officially shoot Green Day more than once (one of my goals for 2024, though I got lucky and saw their intimate Irving Plaza show took some snaps from the crowd).
Still, by all measures, there was a lot more excitement and awesomeness than I can account for and I was having trouble whittling down images to highlight for this recap.
Lincoln Center (these are just from Summer for the City!)
The Town Hall (eclectic music, comedy, and book events)
Joe’s Pub (the wonderful Habibi Fest and other great shows)
Hauser & Wirth (conversations about art, dance amongst art, music amongst art and art)
Top Tours including Pearl Jam’s Dark Matter tour, Green Day’s Saviors tour, Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS tour and Taylor Swift’s The Eras tour (unofficially)
Notable Acts I hadn’t seen before like Steel Pulse, Orbital, The Dandy Warhols and De La Soul
Old Favorites including Bonny Light Horseman, DJ Shadow, Heems and Josh Ritter
Newport Folk (Another great year, having attended at least 10 iterations now)
Newport Folk Portraits (digital)
Portraits (Film)
Non-profits events and galas including work for Global Citizen, IRC, AFI and Wilmers Integrity Prize
Exciting Lineups at Benefit Concerts (for Jesse Malin and The Ally Coalition)
3x multiplier for Glen Hansard and Rachel Zegler (okay, really 2.5 as I didn’t capture Glen opening for Pearl Jam professionally and Zegler appeared via pre-recorded video during one show)
Burlesque Nights with Fire & Fury and Bitsy’s Bits
Very Australia Film Snaps
Random Fun Film Snaps
In 2025, I aim to do more work directly with artists, capture more live music on film, travel for a festival or two, work with some comedians and photograph Green Day several times. But I’d settle for Pearl Jam as I have tickets to several of their shows. It’s already looking to be a busy year.
Thanks to all the marketing teams, publicists, managers, editors, friends, and anyone else (Kellindo!) who I worked with or may have recommended me for photography gigs. It was a truly outstanding year!
